May 2025

In the midst of all that is going on in the world, the idea of preparation and building has captured my imagination.  At Kairos Dinner on May 14, we will read from the book of Nehemiah where he begins the process of rebuilding the city of Jerusalem.  When we read the text, we find Nehemiah taking his time, being intentional and strategic about the steps needed to rebuild the city and the community. Recently, I read Thomas Ricks’ book about the Civil Rights Movement. Repeatedly, he praises the incredible commitment to the preparation of leaders. Again and again, much of their success resulted from thoughtful, intentional development of leaders.  And as Kairos Collective, we strive to build a new kind of worshiping community focused on relationships, contemplation and just action. The work can be slow. In the work of Nehemiah and the civil rights leaders, building takes time, focus and discipline.  When done well, this building can have a profound impact. As we move forward as a community, we will continue to strive to learn lessons from scripture and history about what it means to build a community of impact.
