Reflection
What can I do?
In this current political and cultural moment, so many of us feel overwhelmed and powerless and this is the question that I hear most often. “What can I do?” It is so easy to feel helpless and paralyzed. Each day, we learn about another policy or decision which we know will hurt the most vulnerable. And each day that list grows.
When we meet John the Baptist, in the book of Luke, the chapter begins by reminding the readers of the cruel and indifferent leaders of his community. As John the Baptist shares what a better world can be, people approach him and ask “What should we do?”
John the Baptist answers clearly, concisely addressing people’s contexts. He says, if you have more than one coat, share one with a person who has no coat. If you have food, share it. He tells tax collectors not to overcharge. He tells soldiers not to harass people. Each action is a mix of mercy and justice.
As we continue in this political moment, let’s discern together as John the Baptist did with his community. Let’s ask together what are the clear, concise, simple actions which challenge us in each of our contexts.
What I am learning is that these simple actions shift us from being overwhelmed to imagination, creativity and boldness.
I look forward to discerning what actions we can take together.
